Peking University program aims to internationalize Chinese opera

A new initiative aimed at bringing Chinese traditional opera closer to international audiences was launched on Saturday at Peking University Hall in Beijing.

Titled "Bridging Cultures: Chinese Xiqu Arts on Campus", the program has been organized by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Peking University and the China Theatre Association.

The project seeks to explore new pathways for the internationalization of Chinese xiqu (traditional opera) through universities, creating immersive opportunities for international students and foreign residents to experience China's performing arts heritage.

As part of the program, leading theater companies will partner with universities across China, while renowned performers — including recipients of the prestigious Plum Blossom Award — will serve as mentors through live performances, guided introductions, lectures, workshops and hands-on training.

Speaking at the launch, organizers described traditional Chinese opera as a cultural bridge that can help young people from around the world appreciate traditional Chinese aesthetics and gain a deeper understanding of the country's culture. The goal is to transform participants from observers into enthusiasts — and ultimately ambassadors for Chinese cultural heritage.

Seventeen expert advisers and representatives from eight Beijing-based theater companies and universities have been appointed as part of the program.

Veteran artists including Liu Changyu, Pu Cunxin, Yang Fengyi and Chi Xiaoqiu inaugurated the program, while the launch concluded with a gala performance featuring celebrated winners of the Plum Blossom Award — China's highest theatrical honor — including Feng Yuping, Han Zaifen and Mao Weitao, alongside emerging young performers.
