A new book chronicling a decade of children's art education and philanthropy was unveiled in Beijing on July 11, bringing together artists, educators and long-time supporters to reflect on the lasting impact of creativity and compassion.

Hosted by the Ai Jing Studio and the Gehua Cultural and Creative Industry Development Foundation, the launch of Love Is Like a Seed — A Record of the 10th Anniversary of the Public Initiative "I Love Color — Little Genius Painting Competition" was held at the SKP RENDEZ-VOUS Bookstore in Beijing.

More than a book launch, the event marked the conclusion of the 10-year public welfare initiative, I Love Color — Little Genius Painting Competition. Former judges, volunteer art teachers and guests shared stories from the project's journey, highlighting how the competition has inspired children across China through artistic expression while fostering confidence, imagination and empathy.

Initiated by artist Ai Jing in 2014, the nationwide competition was inspired by the uninhibited drawings of her then 6-year-old nephew. Guided by the belief that "every child is a genius", the program encouraged children to explore their creativity through painting while promoting aesthetic education.

Reflecting on the project's decade-long journey, Ai noted that many participants from the inaugural competition are now attending university. She said the children's artwork not only documented their personal growth but also reflected changing social landscapes and their curiosity about nature, technology and the future.

The newly published volume features around 1,000 selected works created over the past decade, accompanied by stories of young artists and those who supported them. Ai described the book as both a record of artistic practice and a valuable document on children's aesthetic education.

The competition has assembled an international panel of judges over the years, including leading Chinese art educators and international collectors and artists. Several judges attended the event, praising children's unfiltered creativity and emphasizing the importance of nurturing both artistic appreciation and compassion from an early age.

Although the competition has officially concluded, Ai said its mission will continue through the lives of the children it has inspired.

"Only by saying goodbye can we move forward," she said. "The seeds of love we planted will one day grow into towering trees, and that love will continue to be passed on."
