Noble temperament
The Songfeng Painting Society was founded in 1925 by a group of artists and intellectuals who favored historical depth and refinement. They focused on continuing classical painting traditions, and studied the orthodox styles of the "four great painters surnamed Wang" of the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), as well as works from the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, twin peaks of Chinese painting.
Well-known members of the Songfeng Painting Society included Pu Xinyu (1896-1963), who came from Manchurian nobility. His paintings are known for their elegant, dignified style. Pieces by the artist and other members of the Songfeng Painting Society are on display at the Rongbaozhai Art Gallery until Jan 12, and form a tribute to an influential group of artists who contributed to the revival of the ink tradition in the early 20th century.
