Nestled in Pingliang, Gansu, Kongtong Mountain was an important mountain along the ancient Silk Road west of the Guanzhong region and has long been known as the "First Mountain Westward". Towering peaks, vast forests, mist-shrouded slopes, and clear waters combine the rugged grandeur of northern mountains with the graceful beauty of southern landscapes.
Legend has it that Huangdi, known as the Yellow Emperor, the legendary ancestor of the Chinese people, visited Kongtong Mountain three times to seek advice from Guangchengzi, a sage who lived in seclusion here. The legend has contributed to the mountain's reputation as a sacred source of Taoism. Perched atop Mazong Mountain, the main peak, the Huangcheng architectural complex was first built during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and largely rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is regarded as a gem of ancient Taoist architectural art.
