Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, Fuzhou, Fujian

Situated at the heart of Fuzhou's historic central axis, Three Lanes and Seven Alleys stands as a large and well-preserved historical and cultural district in China. Widely celebrated as a "living fossil of the lifang (residential ward) system", it retains its ancient grid layout lined with white walls, gray tiles, and continuous, distinctive horse saddle-shaped walls.

More than 400 notable figures lived here throughout history, including pioneering thinker Yan Fu (1854-1921) and celebrated author Bing Xin (1900-99), while the memorial hall dedicated to the eminent statesman Lin Zexu (1785-1850) stands right along the lanes. Today, centuries-old residences stand alongside modern city buildings, preserving Fuzhou's vibrant cultural lineage through a seamless blend of past and present.
