The timeless elegance of the guzheng (Chinese zither) met the brilliance of the violin, while the lively rhythms of the Xinjiang hand drum resonated alongside the mystique of the Indian sitar at a concert in Toronto on June 11. Held at the Aga Khan Museum, the performance transformed music into a dialogue between East and West.

The event marked Toronto's first large-scale concert celebrating the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Through a carefully curated program, the concert transcended musical boundaries, bringing melodies from different cultures onto a shared stage where they could listen, respond and harmonize with one another.

The program featured instruments such as the guzheng, violin, pipa (four-stringed lute) and sitar. The pieces, including Illumination, Spring in the Tianshan Mountains, and the folk song Give Me a Rose, showcased inventive arrangements and cross-cultural fusion performed by more than a dozen musicians from China and abroad.

At the event, Luo Weidong, China's consul general in Toronto, said music reflects different but equal civilizations, each with its own unique beauty, and emphasized growing cultural exchanges between China and Canada.

Wu Ning, head of the China National Tourist Office in Toronto, said the concert's theme, "Dialogue Between East and West", was reflected not only in the musical traditions represented on stage, but also in the collaboration among performers from different cultural backgrounds.

The event was hosted by the Consulate General of China in Toronto and the China National Tourist Office in Toronto, and co-organized by the Canada-China Cultural Development Association and the Toronto Chinese Music School.
