Reality show explores modern fatherhood in China

The fifth season of the reality show Father in Charge, which turns the lens on how fathers in ordinary families play an active role in parenting, recently aired on Mango TV.

The latest season follows the everyday lives of four families from Hunan province, Beijing, Yunnan province, and the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region over the course of 100 days.

"This season is more rooted in real life. By featuring parents from professions such as healthcare workers and chefs, we continue to focus on ordinary families," said producer Ming Aiqing.

"We hope the stories resonate more deeply with viewers. The core idea has stayed the same throughout every season: we choose families where the parents genuinely love and support each other."

A panel of celebrities, including host Li Ai, singer-actor Wei Chen, and singer-actor Han Geng, watches documentary-style footage of the four families' parenting journeys in the studio. Based on their observations, they offer multidimensional interpretations of parent-child relationships, discuss parenting challenges and analyze the dynamics of family interaction.

Focused on everyday households rather than celebrity-driven drama, the show has built a strong reputation as one of China's most well-received parenting reality programs.

Its first and second seasons received ratings of 9.2 and 8.4 out of 10, respectively, on the review platform Douban.

Ming said, "Our show is authentic in every sense — authentic people, authentic emotions. I believe when you create something emotionally genuine, audiences naturally connect with it."
