Xiangju Opera Theater of Hunan Province

The Xiangju Opera Theater of Hunan Province was founded in Oct.1949. Since it was founded, the Theater has put on a number of high quality plays. When Pipa on the Road and Brothers Meet in Wutai Mountain participated in the 1stNational Opera Exchange Gathering, Xu Shaoqing, Peng Linong, Yang Fupeng and Luo Yuande were given the first, second, third and honorary awards respectively. In 1986, the Theater attended the 1st China Local Opera Exhibition in Hong Kong, where Moon Worship, Life and Death Card and operas were highly evaluated and praised by people from all walks of life in Hong Kong. In 1987, Mountain Ghost and Hatred of Phoenix Flute won prizes in the 1stAutumn of Dongting Lake Art Festival of Hunan Province. In 1988, Mountain Ghost, Hatred of Phoenix Flute, Broken Bridge and Sword as a Gift went onto Beijing's stage, where Xiangju opera artist Zuo Dafen won the 6th Chinese Opera Plum Blossom Award, and Mountain Ghost got the Performance Award of the 1stNational Opera Festival.

In 1990, classic play of Xiangju opera the Tale of Pipa, New Edition went onto Beijing's stage with other operas including Pan Ge Longing for wife, He Yibao Write Complaint, Meet in Gu City and etc. Wang Yongguang was given the 8th Chinese Opera Plum Blossom Award and the 1stCulture Ministry Wenhua Award for Art. The Tale of Pipa won the 1stWenhua award for New Performance and later the Outstanding Literature Art Award of Hunan Province. In 1992, new edition of historical play Emperor Tang Taizong and Wei Zheng won the Act Award in Culture and Art Gathering of Hunan Province. In Nov. of the same year, traditional opera piece The Tale of the White Rabbit, Coming Back of the Two, Moon Worship and etc were performed in Beijing, with He Xiaohan winning the 10th Chinese Opera Plum blossom Award. In 1994, the edited historical opera Evil Dream won the 1stPrize in the New Performance Exchange Gathering of Hunan Province. In 1997, edited historical operas Maling Path, Son's Blood and the Tale of the White Rabbit became the winner of Tian Han Award. Son's Blood also won the 1997's Culture Ministry Wenhua Award for New Performance, Act, Music and Setting Designation.

Now the major artists of the Theater include Liu Chunquan, Dong Wuyan, Zuo Dafen, Wang Yunguang, He Xiaohan, Sheng Heyu, Wang Xiangqiang, Chen Aizhu, Tang Bohua, Chen Feihong and Yan Yanyu.
