Zhangzhou Municipal Xianju Opera Troupe

As one of Fujian Province's five major operas, Fujian Xiangju opera is closely connected with Taiwan's Gezai opera. In August 1951, the Zhangzhou Xiangju Opera Troupe was set up on the basis of combining the Niguang Band and Xinchun Band of Gezai Opera.

The Troupe has created a series of remarkable operas such as Water Lilies, Giving Orders, Happiness of Three Families, Lotus, ode to Blue Water, Soul of Love, Silk Cotton Buddhist Convent, Sword and Harp, Change in Marriage, Moon Eclipse and Story of Loyalty. All of these operas have won various prizes in the East China regional, provincial and municipal art festivals and have been highly praises. In 1990, the Troupe created and staged modern play Soul of Opera, which was selected by the Ministry of Culture to be performed at the National Contemporary Opera Festival. It won the prizes for best new play, playwright, music, stage design and performance at the festival and later the 2ndWenhua Award for best new p lay, playwright and performance.

The Troupe visited Singapore twice in 1983 and 1988 and toured Taiwan region in 1995.

Major artists of the Troupe include first grade performer Zheng Xiuqin; second grade director Wu Ziming; second grade performers Hong Zhenping, Hong Cailian and Han Tiansong.
