Located in the No 255 Jiefang Road ofWuhan, the Wuhan Conservatory of Music aims to nurture special musical talents. The conservatory boasts a distinguished history with its forerunner, the music department of the Wuchang Technical School of Art, founded in 1928. The conservatory has trained over 800 musical intellectuals in 70 years. The conservatory's name has changed many times, finally settling down as the Wuhan Conservatory of Music.

-- Duties and Tasks

The conservatory was authorized to confer the masters degree in music. The conservatory's education focuses on undergraduates and supplements postgraduates. The conservatory has also included primary and middle schools under its administration. In compliance with the need of musical education, the conservatory has set up an education school for adults (certification) and training centers (no certification).

-- Establishment

The conservatory now has departments in composition, director of music and stereo, musicology, wind music, string music, folk music, vocal music, piano, musical education and dancing. The conservatory is also equipped with aBianzhong(an ancient musical instrument with 16 bells) concert hall, which boasts the best sound effects, a radio and audio center, musical laboratory center, vocal laboratory, digital sound recording studio, mass media classroom and modern facilities for the classroom. In 2003, the conservatory set up a new archaeological center for Chinese music and a training center for China's Taoist musical research.

-- Major Achievements

Some of the school's musical groups have reached international acclaim, such as the Orient Symphony Orchestra, established by students and teachers of the wind and string music department; the China Bianzhong Orchestra, established by the students and teachers of the folk music department; and the chorus of the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, established by the vocal music department. In the spring of 2002, the Orient Symphony Orchestra was invited to Austria and successfully performed at the Vienna-China New Spring Concert in both the Golden Hall of Vienna and the Centurial Hall of Frankford.
