In 1953, the Northwest Art Academy instigated a readjustment by combining the music department and the fine art department into the Northwest Technical School of Art. The Xi'an Technical School of Music was founded in 1956 at the site of the school's music department, changing its name to the Xi'an Conservatory of Music in 1960.

The conservatory now includes departments in composition, vocal music, piano, orchestral music, folk instrumental music and musical education, with advanced study classes for cadres and an attached middle school. The conservatory's current president is Zhai Zhirong.
