Chinese production earns praise at Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Chinese production The Becoming Stone drew international audiences during its recent run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the UK.

Directed by the up and coming Qi Huazheng with the support of the Global Young Chinese Elites Project of Theatre Director, The Becoming Stone combines live tracking, real-time interactive visuals and particle imaging with contemporary stagecraft. Through the eyes of young creators, it explores how individuals confront reality, make choices and grow, while touching on universal questions of human nature and personal responsibility.

Although rooted in an Eastern cultural context, the production uses emotion and visual storytelling to bridge linguistic and cultural divides. Audience members and theater professionals praised its innovative use of technology and nuanced portrayal of human experience, saying it offered a fresh perspective on the possibilities of contemporary Chinese theater.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe appearance also gave the production team an opportunity to connect with international theater professionals. Chief producer Chang Xun met with representatives of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and industry figures to explore longer-term cooperation with overseas festivals, theaters and cultural organizations.

The Global Young Chinese Elites Project of Theatre Director was jointly initiated by the Guilin Festival and the Central Academy of Drama. The program supports promising young directors through a process encompassing creation, premieres, domestic touring and international exchange.
