Producing and performing a patriot's life

The original Chinese play, Shen Junru, was presented at the National Theatre of China in Beijing on July 10 as part of the 11th China Original Drama Invitational Exhibition, introducing audiences to the life of one of modern China's most respected patriots.

Shen Junru (1875-1963) was born in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, and began joining patriotic activities at an early age. In 1949, Shen participated in the preparatory work for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and participated in its first meeting.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Shen was appointed president of the Supreme People's Court and vice-chairman of the National People's Congress.

With Tian Qinxin, president of the National Theatre of China, as its artistic director, the play traces Shen's journey from the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) through the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) to the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Drawing on key historical events, the play portrays Shen's lifelong commitment to China and national unity.

Blending sweeping historical scenes with intimate, personal moments, the production uses Shen's lifelong collection of stones as the centerpiece of his steadfast character and moral conviction.
