Eastern spirituality meets contemporary expression

From an early age, Dai Ying received systematic training in two seemingly unrelated disciplines: Chinese calligraphy and table tennis. Yet the years spent mastering both gave her sensitivity to rhythm, speed and hand control through coordinating her fingers, hands and body.

When she paints, she turns the distinct yet interconnected sensations of making a calligraphic stroke and hitting a table tennis ball into the strength and dexterity that guide her to layer shades, and draw lines.

In The Field of Life and Death, her ongoing exhibition at Whitestone Gallery Beijing, curated by Bao Dong, Dai exhibits paintings, including her latest works, that demonstrate an artistic language merging Eastern spirituality with contemporary expression.

She also draws on her own experiences to celebrate the beauty of the female body while reflecting on the challenges women face throughout their lives.
