Have you ever seen the sea light up at night? At the turn of spring and summer, Fujian's Pingtan hides a romantic miracle unique to the sea. Glowing plankton (a phenomenon produced by the bioluminescence of the sea sparkle) awaken with the tides, turning the waves a luminous blue — locals call it "blue tears".
Like the aurora, it depends on water temperature, wind direction, and a bit of luck to appear. Some wait three nights but see only darkness, while others stumble upon it and find the waves filled with stars. If you're willing to leave part of your journey to chance, Pingtan's night may reward you with a sky of stars falling into the tide.
