In late May 1990, Liu Haisu, the late noted painter who was then aged 95, traveled to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Awed by the breathtaking views, he produced two oil paintings and one ink painting in classical Chinese style on the spot.

Glorious Pilgrimage, an ongoing exhibition at the Liu Haisu Art Museum in Shanghai until Feb 28, introduces the audience to those three days in which Liu, a master of colors, created a homage to the wonders of nature.

The exhibition shows the three paintings -- two depicting panoramic landscapes of the Grand Canyon and one hailing a blooming cypress -- as well as photos and videos at the time, documenting how the artist utilized sketchy strokes and vivid colors to capture the views.
