Three new works in the Guoyun Chengchuan series (literally, carrying forward the essence of Chinese culture) were recently released by Jingban Beijing Education Culture Media at the China National Convention Center during the 32nd Beijing International Book Fair, which closed on June 21.
The three works are the Chinese-English bilingual edition of Charm and Evergreen Vitality in Peking Opera, the hardcover edition of Huafu Nichang (Gorgeous Attire and Iridescent Clothing: On Peking Opera Costumes), and a set of Peking Opera master artist collectible cards. They present the rich essence of Peking Opera from three dimensions: the historical evolution of Peking Opera, the aesthetics of its costumes, and the charisma of renowned performers from various schools.
The original Chinese version of Charm and Evergreen Vitality in Peking Opera, written by renowned Chinese traditional opera critic Zhang Yonghe and published in 2020, comprehensively introduces the development and artistic knowledge of Peking Opera.
The book covers a wide range of topics, including the origin and development of Peking Opera, the artistic achievements of early opera masters, and the unique characteristics of the four main role types. It also explores the artistic features of major schools of Peking Opera, the storylines of classic plays, and the symbolic meanings behind its music, costumes, props, and facial makeup. The book has previously been translated into Norwegian and Malay.
This newly released Chinese-English edition features over 550 carefully selected historical photos. Through bilingual text, it showcases for readers both in China and abroad the evolution and contemporary charm of Peking Opera over the past century.
The book Huafu Nichang, co-authored by Liu Fei, a collector of Peking Opera costumes, and Liu Lianlun, a researcher of Peking Opera history and theory, invites readers into the captivating world of opera costumes. It combines stunning visuals with expert commentary to systematically explore the types, styles, colors, and patterns of Peking Opera costumes.
