What if the life you dreamed of slipped just out of reach? That tension comes alive in Beijing People's Art Theatre's latest small-stage production, Beyond the Horizon, which will premiere on May 13 and run till May 29.
Eugene O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon, written in 1918 and premiered on Broadway in 1920, earned the playwright his first Pulitzer Prize. The narrative follows two brothers in rural America: Robert, restless and longing for distant horizons, becomes trapped on the family farm, while Andrew, rooted in the land he loves, finds himself drawn to the sea. Life's unexpected turns crush their dreams, revealing the enduring tension between aspiration and reality.
"Even a century-old work can still reflect ourselves and others — that's the timeless quality of a classic," said Feng Yuanzheng, a veteran actor, director and president of Beijing People's Art Theatre. "As the theater's first small-stage premiere of 2026, we aim to bridge contemporary audiences and this masterpiece through careful interpretation and strong stagecraft."
