Fine woodwork
Ming-style furniture is a collective term invented for articles of wood furniture designed and made in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), which featured fine silhouettes and minimalist beauty.
It later included decorative pieces from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) crafted in the same style. The design of Ming-style furniture involved the aesthetic opinions of scholars — who sometimes ordered furniture for their own use — and the carpentry pursued overall simplicity but with small details worthy of appreciation.
Fine Wood, an exhibition at Liaoning Provincial Museum in Shenyang until Nov 29, shows the grace and subtle beauty of furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties, a heyday of Chinese furniture. Dozens of pieces are from the collection of Prince Kung's Palace Museum in Beijing, formerly a residence of Qing royal members and a trove of exquisite works of arts and crafts.
