A panel discussion focusing on the modernization and localization of cultural heritage took place at Taikoo Li, Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province on Saturday.

Under the title "Tradition and Future: The Modernization and Localization of Cultural Legacy", the event fostered in-depth discussions among participants.

During the discussion, Louis Ng, director of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, examined the relationship between museums and urban development, using his institution as a case study to highlight the pivotal role museums play in cultural heritage and innovation.

"Museums are essential in shaping a better life and enhancing social well-being. The Hong Kong Palace Museum is committed to driving sustainable urban development across environmental, social, cultural, and economic sectors," he said.

"Through innovative approaches, we present China's rich cultural heritage in a way that is both enlightening and enjoyable for the public. Additionally, we actively promote international collaboration, advocating for cultural diversity and inclusivity," Ng stated.

Zhu Yarong, deputy director of the Sanxingdui Museum, discussed how the museum has struck a balance between artifact preservation, cultural heritage, and technological innovation in the digital era. Using the Sanxingdui archaeological site as an example, Zhu highlighted the museum's efforts to rejuvenate the ancient Shu civilization, fostering a cultural dialogue that bridges thousands of years.

Renowned architect Hao Lin, who played a key role in designing Taikoo Li Chengdu, shared his experiences and insights from the project.

"The master planning and architectural design of Taikoo Li Chengdu were focused on revitalizing the heart of this historical city, strengthening the public's connection to the Daci Temple cultural district," Lin said.

Molly Wu, general manager of Taikoo Li Chengdu, highlighted their dedication to integrating local culture and artistic aesthetics into every facet of their business. In recent years, while preserving and promoting local heritage, they have been actively exploring the future of cultural development, she said.

Co-hosted by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Swire Properties, the talk was a special segment of the museum's third edition of "Bi-city Youth Cultural Leadership Program". Launched in 2022, this year's program centers on the future of cultural ecosystems, highlighting the evolving landscape of cultural heritage, innovation, and the creative economy.
