The Bard East-West Ensemble, a New York-based cross-cultural music group founded at the US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, embarked on a 17-day China tour from May 28 to June 13, presenting a vibrant dialogue between Eastern and Western musical traditions across eight cities: Shanghai; Suzhou, Jiangsu province; Hangzhou, Zhejiang province; Shandong province's Jinan, Qufu, Tai'an and Qingdao; and Beijing.
Across 14 concerts and curated arts events, the ensemble brought its cross-cultural vision to universities, cultural institutions and landmark venues.
The tour featured deep collaborations with leading Chinese institutions, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, the Central Conservatory of Music, and the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, as well as performances at cultural hubs.
Founded and artistically directed by conductor and educator Jindong Cai, the ensemble continues to explore new frontiers of musical hybridity.
The program featured 12 works, including Feng · Ya · Song, Silk Road, King Chu Doffs His Armor, and The Carnival of Miao Village, blending traditional Chinese instruments such as the sheng, guzheng and dizi with Western string quintets and percussion.
A reimagined staging of Four Seasons in Lingering Garden, co-created with choreographer Dai Jian, stood out for integrating music, dance and installation art, offering an immersive reinterpretation of classical Chinese aesthetics and earning strong audience acclaim.
