The dramatic social transitions from the late 19th century to the early 20th century spurred profound cultural transformations. Among the most influential responses was the rise of Haipai — the Shanghai school of ink painting — named after a city at the forefront of embracing change.

The spirit — open to renovations, new ideas and forward-looking in temperament — continues to nurture artists today in Shanghai and neighboring areas influenced by the Shanghai school, regardless of medium, style or approach.

The Making of New Shanghai School, an ongoing exhibition at Shanghai University, addresses this endeavor on campus and in academic circles. Running until April 26, it shows works that foreground Shanghai's pivotal role in a globalized world, as well as the city's everyday transformations — across social, cultural and urban life — that continue to redefine artists' visions and practices.
