The highly anticipated original Chinese musical, Snow Embracing the Blue Pass, is set to debut at the Tianqiao Theatre in Beijing from June 21 to 23, offering audiences a captivating blend of traditional and contemporary storytelling.
On June 2, members of the creative team, including musical talents like Gao Yang and director-scriptwriter Li Chaolin, gathered in Beijing to meet fans following a rehearsal session, generating excitement for the upcoming premiere.
Set against the historical backdrop of the Minguo period (1912-49), the musical chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Peking Opera troupe navigating the challenges of wartime survival and internal conflicts among the troupe's founder and apprentices.
Director Li Chaolin revealed that the musical's songs harmoniously fuse elements of pop music with Peking Opera, a revered art form with a rich 200-year history known for its diverse range of artistic expressions encompassing singing, dancing, and martial arts.
Esteemed Peking Opera performers, including Zhang Hongwei from the Shenyang Peking Opera Company and Fu Xiru from the Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company, will take on pivotal roles in the production, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
Gao, known for his participation in the talent show Super Vocal in 2018, has garnered a sizable fan base and will portray one of the apprentices in the musical. Gao shared that he underwent extensive training to master the fundamental skills of Peking Opera performance, underscoring his dedication to the craft.
