Gourd pyrography, one of traditional crafts in China, is also an intangible cultural heritage item. Since ancient times, gourds have been liked by Chinese people. In ancient myths, gourds signified immortality and long life, while in daily life, gourds can be used as containers for liquid—such as liquor and decoction—or auspicious thing that will bring good luck.
Uygur people living in China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region prefer to paint on the surface of gourds and turn them into home decorations. Ali Hushur, a big fan of gourd pyrography, has spent over 20 years on it. His handiworks are highly welcomed by local people and tourists.
