The people of Yunnan have always been courageous and wise when it comes to discovering the flavors of nature. Nanpie, the name in local Dai dialect for a sauce-like dish made with fresh ingredients and spices, is one such creation.

In Dehong autonomous prefecture of Yunnan province, where more than a million people of the Dai ethnic group reside, the tool for making nanpie is a must-have staple in every family. The method of mashing and mixing different flavors may seem simple, but it can yield a seemingly infinite number of taste combinations, depending on what's used.

The second season of Flavorful Origins, another masterpiece by Chinese food documentary director Chen Xiaoqing, the creator of A Bite of China, will premiere on Sept 9 on Tencent.com.

The season, consisting of 10 episodes, will shine a spotlight on Southwest China's Yunnan province, a region blessed with abundant sunlight, fresh produce and exotic spices.
