Artworks bloom from old branches

Hidden Veins, Blooming Anew — Subtle Insights highlights joint efforts to revive cultural heritage not only through the boundless imagination and renewed artistry of its inheritors in their studios, but also by showing them in various settings outside museums and galleries.

The exhibition, running until Oct 10, brings the works of three historical handicrafts to the corridor space that links Blocks B and C at Raycom Infotech Park in Beijing's Haidian district.

Dai Meng's embroidery works champion the time-honored yunjin (cloud brocade) technique — which produced custom-made textiles exclusive to the ruling class in ancient China. She brings a modern sensibility to the craft by re-creating paintings by the late Chinese French modernist painter Chang Yu (also known as Sanyu) (1895-1966).

Liu Yang's ceramic sculptures reflect her experiences of learning at home and abroad. Rather than focusing on ceramics' practical uses, she directs viewers' attention to the material's unique texture in a highly individual and expressive manner.

Cai Zhiwei, a seasoned ronghua (the velvet flower art) artist, creates a range of products, from wall decorations to jewelry.
