Yaoli, meaning "kiln village", reflects its role as the birthplace of Jingdezhen's porcelain industry. By the early Song Dynasty (960-1279), porcelain production here had reached its peak. The town is known as the "source of porcelain, hometown of tea and sea of forests". Surrounded by mountains, it is crossed by the Yaohe River, while well-preserved Huizhou-style buildings dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) are scattered along the river and nestled against the hills. Yaoli was also an important stop along the Huirao Ancient Trail, which connected the historic regions of Huizhou (present-day Shexian county in Anhui province) and Raozhou (present-day Poyang county in Jiangxi province) and witnessed centuries of trade and travel between the two areas.
