Cave people who dwelled inside stone caverns were once known as "stone people" who stood guard outside caves of paintings.
Leaping deer sketched on cliffsides and scratched into monoliths. Flint chipped into blades that pierced the hides of woolly rhinoceroses and puncture the veil of time separating us from the people who sharpened them.
Altay derives its name from its mineral foundations, mining meaning from the massif that lifts its land toward the heavens and the gold specks that glisten deep within its underworld.
Its appellation is born from the Turkic root word for gold, shared by several languages spoken in the region. It's articulated by human tongues but translated from the grammar of geology.
This syntax is expressed in its eponymous mountain peaks, flint blades, stone carvings, rock paintings and, especially, the gold-foil art that gilds its legacy.
It's a story told in stone, by stone, about stone — its words wrested from the ground, then wrapped in glass at Altay Museum in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's northernmost corner.
Depths of history
This epic's narration begins 45,000 years ago, with people who whittled stones while sheltering inside a rock sanctuary itself sculpted by nature — Tongtian Cave.
The cavern's name translates as "adjoined to the heavens" because the elements carved a huge hole in its ceiling above — but its fame is grounded beneath its floor. The earth underfoot tells its story in layers — each a chapter of the dialogue between geology and humanity.
In this cave overlooking what's now China's border with Mongolia, archaeologists unearthed a rare continuous stratigraphic profile, spanning the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron ages — a "four-layer sequence" compressed into sediment.
Tongtian's soil surrendered over 2,000 artifacts — stone tools from the deepest strata, bronze objects from the middle layers, iron items from nearer the surface, and animal bones sprinkled throughout. The remains of hares and sheep, woolly rhinos and brown bears are inscribed with a thesaurus of blades used to butcher them, rendered from a vocabulary of mineral materials that accumulated across the layers of time.
The earliest Altaians knew how to fracture flint, chert and quartz with conchoidal precision to fashion points sharp enough to penetrate flesh, skeletons and wood.
Their descendants learned to coax metal from stone — first copper, then bronze — casting the earliest metalwork found in these mountains. Later came iron, smelted from ore at temperatures that transformed not only metal but the societies that mastered it.
