Blue-and-White Vase Depicting the 'Four Loves', Yuan Dynasty

Blue-and-white porcelain is one of China's most iconic ceramic traditions. Originating during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it reached maturity during the late Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and became the dominant style of porcelain production during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Its elegant cobalt-blue decoration on a white porcelain body has earned worldwide acclaim.

Housed in the Wuhan Museum, this vase is a rare masterpiece from Jingdezhen. Its decoration depicts four celebrated Chinese scholars and their cherished natural companions: Wang Xizhi (303-361) with geese, Tao Yuanming (365-427) with chrysanthemums, Zhou Dunyi (1017-73) with lotus flowers, and Lin Bu (967-1028) with plum blossoms and cranes — giving rise to the theme known as the "Four Loves". The vividly rendered figures, flowing drapery, and harmonious interplay of cobalt-blue tones and intricate motifs showcase the exceptional artistry of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain.
