Emerging artists shine at Beijing exhibition

The next generation of Chinese artists took center stage as the Start of A Long Journey national graduation exhibition of fine arts opened on July 31 at the Shangshang International Art Museum in Songzhuang, Beijing.

Now in its second year at Songzhuang, the exhibition showcases exceptional graduation works from art schools across China, offering a glimpse into the innovative ideas and creative energy of young artists at the onset of their careers.

Designed to bridge art education, contemporary practice, and the public, the exhibition's opening ceremony was attended by cultural officials, representatives from leading art institutions, and educators. Artworks were selected through recommendations from 14 participating universities and an open call for submissions, resulting in 210 artworks and 70 theoretical essays across fields such as painting, sculpture, design, video, installation, and digital art. These works reflect students' creative practices and their thoughts on art history, cultural issues, and contemporary society.

The open call attracted 1,078 submissions from 962 students at 146 universities, with experts selecting 134 works by 121 students from 139 universities. Wang Xiaolin, the exhibition's chief curator, noted that the initiative provides a platform for young artists to display their work and engage with a broader audience, supporting them during a critical stage of their development.

Lin Mao, president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, highlighted Songzhuang's open and diverse creative environment as fertile ground for young artists. "Through the exhibition, we hope more young artists can meet, take root, and grow here," Lin said.

The exhibition also offers follow-up support for selected artists. After last year's event, 22 young creators entered a residency program, receiving housing and studio spaces to continue their artistic exploration. This year, 15 to 30 artists will be selected for one- to three-year residencies, offering creative spaces, professional guidance, and exhibition opportunities.

Hu Bingwen, deputy dean of the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, emphasized that the exhibition represents both a summary of students' academic achievements and a new beginning beyond campus. "By bringing works from universities into Songzhuang, the exhibition allows art education to interact directly with the real artistic environment and society," Hu said.

Looking ahead, Songzhuang plans to bolster its support system for young creators. The Songzhuang Young Artists Workshop, expected to open in the first half of 2027, will provide about 1,000 creative spaces along with shared studios, exhibition facilities, and other services.
