Brushstrokes celebrate a Qing literary master

Serving in several official posts across the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) court, Zhang Wentao (1764-1814) drew lasting inspiration from the diverse landscapes and cultural traditions he encountered throughout his career. A native of Suining in Sichuan province, he was regarded as the province's leading poet of his time. His collected poems were published under his literary pseudonym, Chuanshan ("Boat Mountain").

Zhang was also an accomplished calligrapher. His bold, expressive brushwork reflects the influence of Mi Fu, the celebrated Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) master.

A Pure Dream of Shu Mountains, an exhibition underway in Luzhou, Sichuan, pays tribute to Zhang through dozens of calligraphic works by accomplished artists from across the country. Running at the Sanyue Art Museum through Oct 12, the exhibition celebrates both his calligraphic and poetic legacy, with the featured works presenting Zhang's poems in contemporary calligraphic styles.

At 29, Zhang visited Luzhou, where he was so captivated by the city's renowned wine, picturesque scenery and thriving atmosphere that he wrote three poems inspired by the experience.

The exhibition will later travel to Chengdu, Sichuan, and Beijing.
