Documentary follows young dreamers in Hunan

A documentary exploring the lives and ambitions of young people from across China who have Hunan province their home premiered on July 20, airing simultaneously on Hunan Satellite TV and Mango TV.

Hello Hunan turns its lens on young outsiders who are starting businesses, pursuing careers and forging new lives in Hunan. The program is hosted by Liu Wanghao, a Hunan native, and Zhang Tianyi, who originally hails from Anhui province and has since settled in Hunan.

Among them are a Henan entrepreneur who brought his extended family and fellow villagers to Hunan to build a now-popular tea beverage chain, a Chongqing native who moved to the province for love, and a Malaysian student pursuing her dream of becoming a mortician.

Each roughly 30-minute episode follows a simple yet intimate format. The hosts meet guests in their everyday environments, share conversations, observe their work and personal lives, and close with reflections on what they have learned.

The program is distinguished by its documentary-inspired visual language, which prioritizes realism and human empathy. Through the guests' sincere storytelling and spontaneous on-camera interactions, the series reveals how diverse cultural backgrounds converge, collide, and ultimately enrich one another within Hunan's social fabric.

The program shows that Hunan is actively positioning itself as a "youth-friendly province", with the ambition of becoming a welcoming destination for dreamers from across the country. Local officials and policymakers have rolled out a series of favorable employment and entrepreneurship initiatives, while the province's open and inclusive urban character provides an additional layer of support for those who choose to call it home.
