Classic poet returns through modern dance and song

Li Qingzhao, an original dance drama by the Shanghai Dance Theatre, made its National Centre for the Performing Arts debut on July 17, offering audiences a visually stunning reinterpretation of one of China's greatest poets through movement, music and Song Dynasty (960-1279) aesthetics.

The production traces the life of renowned poet Li Qingzhao (1084-1155), weaving together her literary brilliance, personal resilience and patriotic spirit. Rather than presenting a conventional biography, the creative team uses 15 traditional cipai (lyric tune patterns) as the dramatic framework, charting her journey from youthful optimism to wartime exile and eventual inner renewal.

Inspired by Song Dynasty philosophy and visual culture, the production features celadon-inspired stage design, ink-wash imagery and minimalist aesthetics, while incorporating the art of rolling lanterns to evoke the vitality of everyday life in ancient China.

The creative team spent nearly four years developing the production, conducting extensive historical research and consulting leading scholars on Li's life and works. Composer Guo Haowei blends traditional Chinese instruments with strings and electronic music to create a score that interacts dynamically with the choreography rather than simply accompanying it.

Producer Wang Yan said the production reimagines the poet through a contemporary lens, highlighting both her emotional journey and enduring commitment to preserving China's cultural heritage during times of upheaval. "Her resilience and independent spirit continue to resonate today," she said.

Following successful performances in Shanghai and Hong Kong, the Beijing run continued through July 19, bringing modern audiences into a dialogue with one of China's most celebrated literary figures while showcasing the enduring appeal of traditional Chinese culture through contemporary dance.
