The 2026 Dragon Boat Cultural Festival and China–Sri Lanka Friendship Cup Regatta was held on June 14 at Colombo Port City, co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The event brought together over 1,000 participants, including the Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, Sri Lankan government and military officials, foreign diplomats, local residents, overseas Chinese and contestants.

Nineteen teams from the two countries competed fiercely in the regatta, with several paddlers traveling from Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka.

Qi Zhenhong said that dragon boat racing, one of China's oldest traditional festive activities, embodies the spirit of unity and perseverance.

Qi added that China and Sri Lanka are surging forward together, like a dragon boat on water, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

The festival also featured Chinese cuisine, cultural displays, children's performances and family games, capped by a rod-puppet show by the Rugao Puppet Art Troupe from China.
