The original Chinese musical The Harmony of Zhaxi premiered at the China National Opera House in Beijing on May 31.

Starring Yu Yueyue, Li Ke, Wang Zelin, and Leng Song, alongside the ensemble from Zhaotong city, Yunnan province, the production follows the Zhaxi Conference in Zhaotong, a pivotal meeting during the Red Army's historic Long March (1934-36).

Through the eyes of Red Army soldiers and local youth, the musical brings to life the deep bond between the army and local communities, while highlighting a crucial moment in China's revolutionary history.

Blending poetic dialogue with Yunnan province's traditional folk music, the musical celebrates ideals, loyalty, and revolutionary spirit. Led by producer Tao Rui with music by He Tiancheng and Guo Xuanyu, the production brings an immersive theatrical experience.

For Tao, this Beijing debut represents a 74-year journey since Zhaotong's first local troupe was founded in 1952.

The creative team brings deep ties to Yunnan and a commitment to authentic storytelling.

Director Gao Ruijia emphasizes character arcs rich with emotional tension. Composer He fuses symphonic and pop music with Yunnan folk elements, creating a score that resonates with both historical grandeur and modern audiences.

The production continues its show in the capital on June 1, inviting audiences to travel back to 1935 to witness the courage, hope, and humanity that shaped a nation.

As this year marks the 90th anniversary of the Long March victory, the musical premiered in Yunnan this May and is touring nationwide.
