Modern landscapes

The 20th century saw growing exchanges between Eastern and Western artistic traditions in China. Artists experimented with blending classical mountain-and-water (shanshui) aesthetics with oil painting techniques. Beyond the Mundane, now on view at the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, reflects the institution's long-standing focus on modern Chinese art. The exhibition traces how artists over the past century reimagined landscape painting, pushing stylistic boundaries while engaging with tradition.

On view through May 31, it brings together works by 20 artists, including Xu Beihong (1895-1953) and Dai Ze (1922-2023). Despite the challenges they faced, these artists turned to China's mountains and rivers as sources of national spirit and identity, capturing them with expressive, dynamic brushwork.
