Twin peaks

Liu Haisu (1896-1994) and Yan Wenliang (1893-1988) stand as two towering figures in the development of modern Chinese art education. As founders of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Jiangsu province, respectively, they helped define the landscape of 20th-century Chinese art.

The Liu Haisu Art Museum in Shanghai is presenting The Two Peaks, an exhibition through May 10, that surveys the two artists' lives, artistic styles and educational philosophies. Living through periods of sweeping social and cultural change, both artists embraced a shared belief in self-improvement through art and education.

9 am-5 pm, closed on Mondays. 1609 Yan'an Xi Lu, Shanghai. 021-6270-1018.
