Handwritten or printed, the couplets rendered in the calligraphic style have been an essential part of the festive customs associated with Chinese New Year celebrations.

Whether short or extended, composed of a few words or dozens, these couplets embody the literary spirit of Chinese culture, spanning poetry, prose and lyrics, while evoking joyful sentiments.

Leaping Steeds in a Spring Breeze, an ongoing exhibition at the National Art Museum of China, is the museum's annual presentation celebrating Chinese New Year through a display of handwritten couplets that integrate the beauty of calligraphy and literature.

The works on view, until March 8, are drawn primarily from NAMOC's collection, noted for their rich content, concise language, and balanced composition.
