Promoting the systematic protection and unified supervision of cultural heritage is urgently needed to address the challenges currently facing the sector, said Zhang Guanghan, deputy chief planner at the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, on Sunday.

He made the remarks during the third plenary meeting of the third session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, emphasizing the need for improved top-level design in the area.

As a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, Zhang's suggestion is to further strengthen communication and coordination among the various authorities involved in the preservation of cultural relics and monuments, historical villages and communities, cultural landscapes and intangible cultural heritage, and to enhance legislation, refine regulatory and penalty provisions and leverage the role of public interest litigation.

Zhang also calls for the increased use of technological means to improve real-time monitoring capabilities and encourages wider public participation in cultural heritage preservation.
