Colorful legacy
For So Long, and Colorful, an exhibition of paintings created by late artist Huang Yongyu in the last decade of his life, is on at the Chengdu Art Museum in Sichuan province. It runs until April 6.
Huang, a versatile artist, writer and designer, died on June 13, 2023, at the age of 99. He once envisaged his centennial exhibition, saying, "it will show 100 paintings, to celebrate the 100 years I have lived". The current exhibition shows his "latest works". He said before his passing, "I will be doing my best, but maybe they are not perfect for the audience. But hopefully, people will feel they are not bad, and that's enough for me".
Born in Changde, Hunan province, Huang left his hometown in his early teens, and earned a living by taking on various jobs. He taught himself to draw, paint and write. His works reveal the realities of the world, in a straightforward manner.
