UN headquarters hosts Spring Festival gala

A grand Spring Festival celebration titled "Dancing Snake, Auspicious Beginnings" was held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on Jan 17, marking the first Spring Festival celebration at the UN since the festival's inscription on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The event drew over 500 participants, including senior UN officials and diplomatic representatives.

In his speech, China's Permanent Representative to the UN ambassador Fu Cong highlighted that the Spring Festival embodies the Chinese cultural values of peace, harmony, and unity. He noted that the successful UNESCO inscription has not only enriched the global intangible cultural heritage but also provided a new platform for exchanges between civilizations. Fu emphasized China's willingness to share the cultural charm of the Spring Festival with the world and contribute to the diversity of global cultures.

Li Junhua, under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs, reflected on the past year's progress in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development under the UN's leadership. He underscored the profound significance of the Spring Festival to people of Chinese descent worldwide and its unique role in fostering cultural exchanges.

Melissa Fleming, under-secretary-general for global communications,called for collective efforts to end conflicts, address climate change, and find solutions to pressing global issues. Fleming also acknowledged China's steadfast support for multilateralism and its critical role in promoting global cooperation and sustainable development.

The gala was organized by the UN Chinese Book Club. On behalf of the club, president Zhang Yuxi welcomed all attendees and expressed gratitude for their participation. Zhang remarked that the successful UNESCO inscription represents a significant milestone for Chinese culture on the global stage. He added that, as the UN marks its 80th anniversary, Chinese staff members are committed to working alongside the international community to contribute to the cause of global peace and development.

The evening's program featured an array of festive activities, including interactive experiences such as "Blessing with Chinese Characters," "New Year Photo Frames," and "Printing Red Envelopes," which provided guests with a delightful taste of traditional and modern Chinese New Year celebrations.
