Life & Times of Michael K to greet Shanghai

One of the most anticipated productions of this year's Modern Drama Valley, Life & Times of Michael K will be presented at Yunfeng Theatre from May 10 to 12.

The play based on Nobel Prize-winning author J.M Coetzee's book of the same title, which was adapted by Lara Foot in collaboration with the Tony Award-winning Handspring Puppet Company from South Africa.

The annual theater festival Modern Drama Valley, hosted by Jing'an district of Shanghai, is taking place from April 26 to May 13 this year.

Life & Times of Michael K is an epic-scale show, with multi-layered theatrical staging that combines puppetry, performance, film and evocative music. It gives life to Coetzee's Booker Prize-winning novel and brings together some of South Africa's most revered, multi-award-winning artists and creatives.

Written and directed by Foot, it is the largest and most illustrious undertaking by The Baxter Theatre in Cape Town over the past decade. Since its premiere in 2021, the show has won The Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Assembly Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, earned six five-star reviews and has received high praise from the New York Times.
