Celebrated director Jia Zhangke, a pioneering figure in China's arthouse cinema, has achieved a remarkable feat as his latest directorial work, Caught by the Tides, has been shortlisted to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the upcoming 77th Cannes Film Festival. This marks the sixth time in his illustrious directorial career, spanning nearly three decades, that Jia has been recognized in this manner.

The unveiling of the main competition section lineup by Cannes' organizers featured a host of high-profile rivaling movies, including Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, American filmmaker Paul Schrader's Oh, Canada, and French director Jacques Audiard's musical melodrama Emilia Perez.

Jia's earlier achievements at Cannes include winning the Award for Best Screenplay for A Touch of Sin in 2013, a film interweaving four stories occurring in different provinces with respective violent ends. This recognition adds to the anticipation surrounding Caught by the Tides.

Set against the backdrop of 2001 to 2023, the actual production period of the film, Caught by the Tides features actress Zhao Tao, who is also Jia's wife and has prominently featured in multiple works by the director. The film narrates the story of a Chinese woman silently experiencing the tumult of life, blending fiction with documentary filmmaking techniques, as highlighted by Jia.

The film's international distribution rights have been acquired by the French company MK2 Films, with Japanese filmmaker Shozo Ichiyama and actress-turned-filmmaker Liang Jiayan serving as the producers, adding further international intrigue to the project.
