Chosen, an upcoming animated film that combines sci-fi elements and Chinese culture, is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide on Jan 6.
The tale, filled with imaginative elements, recounts the story of a green-skinned dragon and a mischievous monkey who occasionally join forces with a brave young girl. Together, this unlikely trio embarks on a journey to confront an unprecedented crisis on the Earth: the invasion of alien robots.
Recently, the movie’s major creators, as well as a dozen critics and industry insiders, attended a seminar at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
The director, a former internet celebrity who prefers to use only his online name Yuzhou Zhitie (iron of the universe), said that he had been preparing and producing the project for a decade, which has realized his dream of promoting China’s traditional values and philosophical thoughts to overseas audiences.
Xu Yanyan, the producer, mentioned that the movie, which will be released both domestically and overseas, drew inspiration from many traditional Chinese elements. For example, the monkey’s stunts are inspired by Chinese martial arts skills, and a wall representing the protagonist’s childhood memories was inspired by the red walls of the Forbidden City.
