Four years after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the best animated feature at the 91st Academy Awards, Miles Morales, the teenage superhero who has become the new Spider-Man in Sony's animation world, has returned to Chinese theaters in the sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The film will be released in China on Friday and has currently topped the country's presale box office charts with the online ticket booking accounting for over 30 percent of all Chinese screens.

The movie follows Morales as he reunites with Gwen Stacy, also known as Spider-Woman from another universe. This leads him to enter a mysterious society, which is crowded with more than 200 Spider-people and Spider-creatures, including both males and females, and even a cat and horse. However, Morales discovers a shocking truth that could put his father's life in danger or have catastrophic consequences for his world.

On Wednesday, the 140-minute movie held its premiere screening in downtown Beijing. The event brought together more than 10 cosplayers, all dressed in Spider-people costumes from different universes. Advanced screenings were also held in 29 other cities.
