Niyonkuru attributes all of his success in his new craft to the great expertise and training his mentors provided.

"All my home furniture, arts and crafts are made from bamboo because I have a great passion for the craft. My livelihood depends on it," says Niyonkuru.

Yu Qinhong, a Chinese expert at the center, says he has trained Rwandan students how to make quality products from bamboo to attract more customers.

"Rwanda is suitable for developing the bamboo industry. They have the raw materials, a large population of young people and a market for bamboo products," says Yu.

Yu reckons that Rwanda's dry climate is favorable for keeping the mold away from bamboo furniture.

"I have been here for over a decade. I have deep feelings for Rwanda and its people. Our country spent a lot on training, and I am happy to see the fruit of China's aid work that has helped develop bamboo production and weaving into an industry, which allows more young people to earn money," Yu says.
