The mug handle is designed in the shape of bamboo, which is in itself a symbol of ascendance and success; meanwhile, the nine holes carved in the bamboo make it look like the farm boy's bamboo flute, adding an extra sense of whimsy to the design.
"This image, one that is of peace, harmony, contentment and prosperity, is the collective yearning of the Chinese people; and artists through generations have been giving this simple longing a poetic sensibility as a way to elevate it. This is something contemporary designers should aspire to do with their designs, as well," Shi said.
"Lift the golden toad and turn over the lotus leaf, as you hold the bamboo flute, smell the divine aroma of tea and enjoy the picturesque image of the buffalo and the boy. Surrender and get transported to a different world, where everything is serene and slow. Imagine yourself relaxing in a mid-summer afternoon, listening to the frog croak and feeling the lotus-scented breeze—the season of harvest is upon us," he said.
