Chinese people start their preparations for the Spring Festival more than 20 days ahead. The 12th lunar month in Chinese is called la yue, so the eighth day of this lunar month is la yue chu ba, or laba. The day is also known as the Laba Rice Porridge Festival. The Laba this year falls on Jan 18.
To celebrate the coming Chinese New Year, the Year of the Ox, the Chinese Cultural Center in Wellington has scheduled a series of online and offline performances. The dance drama Chinese Stories -- 12 Zodiac Animals will be staged in Wellington as a part of the celebration.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago, the third largest city in the US, has encouraged residents of all backgrounds and ages to join in the abundant and vibrant festivities of the Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb 12 this year.
