As someone who started learning Chinese at the age of 11, I remember that in all the China-related materials that I could get my hands on — from textbooks to films — the Chinese New Year has always been mentioned as one of the most important elements. More than 2,500 years ago, ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius said his famous quote: "It's a pleasure to have friends coming from afar." And this sense of hospitality has remained in Shandong province — Confucius' home — ever since.
