The Inheritance and Development of Traditional Festival in the Modern Age Workshop on Happy Chinese New Year was held in Shanghai on Oct 16. It was sponsored by the Bureau for External Cultural Relations of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, co-organized by International Training Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asian-Pacific Region (CRIHAP). Xie Jinying, deputy director of the Bureau for External Cultural Relations, Wang Wei, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV and Niu Genfu, vice president of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, attended the opening ceremony.

Xie Jinying said that culture has been handed down from one generation to another. It is a reflection of the spiritual pursuit of human beings and a spiritual home that can never be abandoned. The inheritance and development of culture depends on both the accumulation of its own and cultural exchanges. Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, has been experiencing sustaining inheritance for thousands of years. It is still the core value of the thoughts of Chinese people.

Twenty-five guests from 21 countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, New Zealand, Chile, Egypt and Benin attended the seminar. They explored the intangible cultural heritage in Shanghai and Suzhou and shared views and experiences on the inheritance of Spring Festival and the condition of Chinese culture. This event will provide powerful intellectual support for the Happy New Year activity overseas.
